# Insurance checklist for a new business

Prepare business insurance before opening: operations, leases, contracts, property, employees, vehicles and data risks, with a focused checklist for your first quote.

The quick answer

Before buying startup business insurance, describe the work, people, property, vehicles and customer information involved. Gather lease and contract requirements, estimate revenue and payroll, and identify the dates coverage is needed. Then compare a suitable package with any separate policies required for exposures the package does not include.

A new business often needs insurance before its first ordinary day of trading: signing a lease, taking delivery of equipment or entering a customer’s premises may create an earlier deadline. Build the review around those milestones. The aim is a workable insurance plan for the business you are opening, with room to update it as the operation grows.

## Describe what the first year will look like

Write a short description of your services or products, customers, locations and work performed away from your premises. Include online sales, installation, delivery or professional advice when relevant. A business name or industry code alone may leave out important activities.

Use realistic estimates for revenue, payroll and staffing, and identify which figures are forecasts. Tell the broker about experience in the field even if the company itself is new. Accurate information helps the carrier evaluate the operation and explains later changes to the quote.

## Collect requirements before the deadline

Bring the insurance sections of leases, customer contracts and vendor agreements. Identify the requested limits, additional-insured wording, evidence of coverage and dates. A certificate request can reveal a coverage requirement that should be considered when selecting the policy.

Keep the legal business name consistent across the application and agreements. Forming an LLC does not replace an insurance review. If a contract is unclear, identify the issue for the appropriate adviser instead of assuming that buying a standard package resolves every obligation.

## Match each exposure to a coverage conversation

General liability addresses certain claims by others involving injury, property damage or personal and advertising injury. Property coverage concerns the business’s own insured assets. A business owner’s policy can package selected liability, property and business income protection for eligible operations.

A package does not include every risk. Professional services, employee injuries, business vehicles and cyber incidents may call for separate coverage or endorsements. Explain home-based activity too; personal home insurance should not be assumed to cover the business.

- Premises, stock, furniture, equipment and tools that travel.

- Customer injury, product and completed-work exposures.

- Employees, owners, subcontractors and operating states.

- Professional advice, vehicles and sensitive customer information.

## Build an insurance budget from actual proposals

Ask for suitable coverage options with total premiums, initial payments, installments and applicable charges. Mark the limits and deductibles beside each price. CoverTrust does not add an additional broker fee, but carrier charges and required policy fees may still apply.

Ask which estimates may be audited or adjusted and which coverages have conditions you must maintain. Security controls, payroll records and equipment inventories are part of operating the business, not merely questions to answer once during an application.

## Confirm coverage before the relevant activity starts

Work backward from the first lease, employee, delivery or customer job. Ask what information remains outstanding and when the insurer can confirm coverage. Do not treat a preliminary quote as permission to promise a particular certificate or endorsement to a customer.

Review the issued documents for the correct entity, locations, activities, policy dates and selected limits. Save the proof requested by each counterparty and the actual policy documents. A certificate summarizes coverage; it does not replace those terms.

## Set a routine for changes after launch

Revisit the insurance plan when you hire, buy a vehicle, add a location, change services or accept a contract with different requirements. Keep estimates current and retain records for any premium audit. A policy based on the opening plan may need changes as the business develops.

For a first quote, send Daniel the business description, state and opening timeline, then prepare the contracts and estimates for follow-up. Keep sensitive payroll or customer records out of the initial message field. He can explain what the carrier needs next.

## Common questions.

### Can a new business get insurance without prior coverage?

Available options depend on the operations and insurer. Explain that the business is new, provide honest projections and share relevant owner experience.

### Does a BOP cover everything a startup needs?

No. A BOP packages selected coverages for eligible businesses. Vehicles, employees, professional services and cyber exposures may require additional review.

### Do I need a separate review for a home business?

Yes. Describe the business to the home insurer and commercial broker. Personal property and liability coverage may have limitations for business activity.

### When should I request the first quote?

Start before the first activity that needs insurance, such as signing a lease or beginning work for a customer. Timing depends on information, eligibility and carrier review.
