# Insurance for electricians and electrical contractors

An electrical contractor's application should describe more than the trade name. Troubleshooting in occupied homes, new construction and installing specialized systems can raise different questions. CoverTrust welcomes quote inquiries in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania; available options depend on the work, location and underwriting.

The coverage conversation

An electrician's insurance review commonly considers general liability, tools and equipment, work vehicles and employees. Start with the electrical services actually performed, then review exclusions, completed operations and customer requirements. A contractor package is not a guarantee that every type of electrical work is covered.

## Describe the systems you work on

Separate service and repair from new installations. Explain whether the business handles residential, commercial or industrial work, and identify specialized operations such as solar connections, generators or charging equipment. Include the work you subcontract as well as the work employees perform.

List the tasks you decline, too. A clear scope helps the broker distinguish a residential service business from a company taking on a much broader project. It also provides a reference when a new contract introduces a different activity.

## Review work that is finished as well as work in progress

Ask how the proposed liability policy treats covered injury or property damage involving completed operations. Separately discuss damage to the work itself and the cost of correcting workmanship. Those questions should not be treated as if they have the same answer.

Bring the customer's actual insurance requirements. Additional-insured wording, completed-operations requests and other endorsements need review under the policy. A certificate summarizes selected coverage; it cannot independently add protection that the policy does not provide.

## Separate your meters, portable tools and vehicles

Prepare an equipment list that distinguishes portable testing equipment from tools or storage permanently attached to a van. Include items rented for an occasional project, where they are stored and whether they remain at a job site overnight.

Ask which policy addresses each category. Coverage for the vehicle itself does not automatically settle the question of tools inside it. Describe every driver and garaging location, including employees who use their own cars for business.

## Keep the crew and project description current

Provide payroll estimates by job duty, operating states and subcontractor information when requested. Tell Daniel about projects outside the usual territory or a planned change in the size of the crew. Workers' compensation and employer responsibilities depend on applicable state rules and policy terms.

Before a new project begins, confirm the requested coverage and effective date with the insurer or authorized representative. Sending the requirements early gives the application and any endorsement request a clearer starting point; it does not guarantee carrier approval or timing.

## Have these details ready.

- Electrical services and project types, including specialized systems.

- Current policies, revenue and payroll estimates by job duty.

- Portable tools, test equipment, rented items and storage details.

- Vehicle and driver lists, plus customer insurance requirements.

## Common questions.

### Does electrician insurance automatically cover every electrical service?

No. The operations described, policy wording, exclusions and insurer eligibility matter. Disclose specialized work before accepting a proposal or expanding the business's services.

### Are tools covered when left in a van?

It depends on the equipment coverage and its theft, storage and location conditions. Ask about the actual overnight arrangement and any deductible or limit.

### Can I get a certificate for a customer?

Share the complete request and legal names. A certificate can be prepared only from applicable coverage; any required endorsement must be reviewed separately.
