# Handyman insurance: build a quote around your actual jobs

A handyman business can take on many small jobs, but small does not mean identical. The work accepted, tools used and people involved should be clear before comparing insurance. CoverTrust welcomes inquiries in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania; options depend on the actual activities and insurer review.

The coverage conversation

Handyman insurance is a practical grouping of relevant coverages, not permission to perform every trade or a promise that all maintenance work is covered. Review contractor liability, tools, vehicles and employee exposures against a specific job list. Specialized or newly added work should be disclosed and evaluated separately.

## Replace the catch-all label with a work list

Describe the repairs, installations and maintenance the business actually performs. Separate furniture assembly, minor finish work and general property upkeep from structural work, roofing, electrical, plumbing or other specialized activities. Identify anything subcontracted and explain the types of properties served.

Include the work you decline and any practical limits on project scope. The purpose is an accurate application, not an insurance company deciding what permits or licenses your business needs. Coverage and permission to perform a trade are separate questions; applicable requirements should be checked through the appropriate authorities.

## Review the job when the scope changes

A request can grow after work starts: a small repair becomes a larger replacement, or a customer asks for another trade to be included. Record the revised scope and ask whether it changes the coverage review. Do not assume that a policy arranged for routine maintenance accepts every later project.

Tell the broker about subcontractors, work at heights or equipment rented for an unusual task. An insurer needs the real operation, even when a task is infrequent. Keeping examples of typical jobs can make the conversation clearer than trying to describe the business with a single revenue figure.

## Separate accidental damage from redoing your work

Ask how the proposed liability policy addresses covered third-party injury or property damage, work in progress and completed operations. Damage to the item being worked on, correcting poor workmanship and fulfilling a warranty can have different treatment. A customer's complaint alone does not tell you which provision applies.

Bring actual customer or property-manager requirements. If an additional-insured endorsement or particular limit is requested, have it reviewed before promising compliance. A certificate summarizes selected policy information; it does not create coverage or replace the underlying policy terms.

## Track tools from storage to the job

List portable tools, higher-value equipment and rented items. Describe overnight storage, job-site storage and transport in a vehicle. Ask about covered locations, theft conditions, scheduling, valuation and deductibles under any tools or inland marine option.

Review the vehicle separately, including ownership, regular drivers and business use. A van's physical damage protection does not automatically insure the equipment carried inside it. If a helper uses a personal vehicle for errands, disclose that arrangement rather than assuming the business has no auto exposure.

## Prepare a quote that reflects the people doing the work

Provide revenue estimates, payroll by duty, operating states and information about employees or subcontractors. Describe the arrangement accurately without using an insurance application to decide legal worker classification. Ask how changes and any premium audit should be handled.

Compare proposals using the same work list, equipment values, staffing and effective date. Note any exclusions or unanswered questions next to the premium. A complete inquiry can reduce avoidable back-and-forth, but eligibility, approval and the time coverage can begin still depend on the insurer and application.

## Have these details ready.

- Specific jobs accepted, excluded activities and typical project descriptions.

- Revenue, payroll, employees, subcontractors and operating states.

- Tools, rented equipment, storage, vehicles and regular drivers.

- Current policies, customer requirements and desired effective date.

## Common questions.

### Does handyman insurance cover every kind of home repair?

No. The actual operations, work classifications, exclusions and insurer eligibility matter. Share specialized tasks and scope changes instead of relying on the trade label.

### Does an insurance policy replace a trade license or permit?

No. Insurance coverage and legal authorization to perform work are separate. Check applicable requirements with the relevant authority and describe the authorized work accurately.

### Are occasional helpers included automatically?

Do not assume so. Describe who helps, their duties and the working arrangement. Employee and subcontractor questions should be reviewed under the applicable rules and policy terms.

### What if a customer asks for proof before I start?

Provide the full insurance requirements and correct legal names. Confirm the policy and any necessary endorsements before relying on a certificate or promising that a requirement is satisfied.
