# Insurance for landscaping and lawn care businesses

A lawn-care route and a landscape construction project can involve very different work. Start with the services your business actually performs throughout the year. CoverTrust can review quote inquiries for New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, with availability subject to operations, eligibility and underwriting.

The coverage conversation

Landscaping insurance is a combination of relevant coverages, not one universal policy. Review liability, mowers and mobile equipment, work trucks and trailers, and employees. Separately disclose tree work, chemical application, excavation, design and winter services so the insurer can evaluate the complete operation.

## Describe a full year of work

Break down mowing and maintenance, planting, irrigation, hardscape work and any other services. Include seasonal tasks even if they account for a small share of revenue. Snow removal, tree work or chemical application should not disappear from the application because the quote is being requested in another season.

Identify who performs each activity and whether it is subcontracted. Explain residential, commercial and municipal customers separately when relevant. A precise description gives the broker a basis for checking the proposed policy's work classifications and exclusions.

## Track equipment beyond the storage yard

List mowers, compact machinery, handheld tools and rented equipment with approximate values. Describe transport, loading, temporary job-site storage and where items are kept overnight. Explain whether equipment is shared between crews.

Discuss tools and inland marine coverage alongside vehicle and trailer coverage. A trailer's damage, the mower on it and liability from using the truck can involve different policy provisions. Ask which items must be scheduled and what theft or security conditions apply.

## Review the work and the property around it

General liability can address certain covered third-party injury and property damage claims. Ask how the proposed policy treats the activities your crews perform and property they are working on. Do not assume it covers every cost of redoing planting, irrigation or construction work.

If customers request certificates, submit the actual contract requirements, including additional-insured requests and any seasonal services named in the agreement. Contractual promises and insurance coverage are not automatically the same.

## Keep crew, vehicle and revenue details aligned

Prepare payroll by job duty, expected revenue and operating states. Describe seasonal employees and subcontractor use. Ask how changes during the year should be reported and whether estimated figures can be reviewed through an audit.

Before adding a new service, vehicle or piece of equipment, check whether it changes the current coverage. Keeping the application aligned with the business is more useful than selecting a package based only on the number of trucks or workers.

## Have these details ready.

- Annual service list with seasonal and specialized activities.

- Payroll and revenue estimates, crew roles and subcontractor details.

- Equipment inventory, storage practices and rental arrangements.

- Truck, trailer and driver schedules, plus customer requirements.

## Common questions.

### Does lawn-care coverage automatically include tree work or snow removal?

No. Disclose those activities and ask about eligibility, classifications and exclusions. They should not be assumed covered merely because the business also maintains lawns.

### Are my mowers insured under the truck policy?

Do not assume so. Review the truck, trailer and carried equipment separately, including physical damage, theft, transit and storage conditions.

### Can seasonal payroll affect the quote?

Yes. Accurate staffing and payroll estimates help describe the operation. Ask about reporting changes and any audit process under the proposed policy.
