# Insurance for painters and painting contractors

An interior repaint and a commercial exterior project can require different equipment, access and preparation. Your insurance application should make those differences visible. CoverTrust welcomes painting-business inquiries in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, with coverage subject to eligibility, policy terms and underwriting.

The coverage conversation

Painting contractors commonly consider general liability, tools and equipment, work vehicles and employees. Describe the surfaces, buildings, access methods and preparation work involved. Ask about overspray, property being worked on and completed operations without assuming the policy pays for every finish problem or correction.

## Describe the project beyond the word painting

Separate interior and exterior work, residential and commercial projects, and any industrial or specialty finishes. Explain access methods and whether the business uses lifts, scaffolds or subcontractors. Surface preparation belongs in the application alongside the final coating.

Identify any work involving hazardous materials or specialized remediation for separate review. Do not assume that an ordinary painting classification includes those activities. The insurer needs an accurate scope before deciding what it can offer.

## Distinguish property damage from correcting your work

An allegation of damage to nearby property raises a different question from a customer disliking the color or asking for a surface to be repainted. Ask how the liability policy treats overspray, property being worked on and damage alleged to arise after the project is completed.

Explain any guarantees or warranties in the customer contract. Insurance is not automatically a promise to pay the cost of fulfilling those obligations. The broker can identify questions for the insurer without treating a hypothetical scenario as a confirmed covered claim.

## Account for tools, rented access equipment and storage

List sprayers, preparation tools and other equipment with approximate replacement values. Include rented items and explain where equipment and materials are stored, both at the business and on a project. Ask which items need to be scheduled and what theft or location conditions apply.

Review vans, trucks, trailers and regular drivers separately. Describe transporting materials and moving crews between jobs. Vehicle physical damage and protection for tools or supplies carried in a vehicle are separate parts of the comparison.

## Align the application with the crew and contracts

Provide expected revenue, payroll by duty and the states where work occurs. Explain subcontractor arrangements and any planned expansion into a new kind of project. Ask whether the proposed premium uses estimates that may later be audited.

Submit insurance requirements before the planned start date. Additional-insured requests or specific completed-operations wording may need endorsements and insurer review. A certificate can summarize the relevant policy but cannot create terms the insurer has not agreed to provide.

## Common questions.

### Will insurance pay to redo a paint job?

Do not assume so. Correcting your work, satisfying a warranty and responding to a covered third-party damage claim are different issues. Review the policy's actual terms.

### Should exterior heights and access equipment be disclosed?

Yes. Describe the work and how crews reach it. Those details help the insurer evaluate the operation and any applicable restrictions.

### Are rented sprayers or lifts automatically covered?

No. Identify rented items and rental obligations. Ask about eligible equipment, valuation, deductibles and the locations or uses covered.
