## What does it help protect?

Renters insurance can protect personal belongings, provide personal liability coverage and help with certain additional living expenses after a covered loss. Compare the limits and settlement terms with the value of your belongings and your lease requirements.

General information. Actual coverage depends on the policy.

## Use your lease as the starting point

Have the apartment address, move-in date and the insurance section of your lease ready. Tell Daniel what proof the landlord requests and when it is due. Lease requirements are one part of the decision; you also need protection that fits your belongings and liability exposure. A document satisfying a lease does not by itself explain every limit, exclusion or claim-settlement condition in the policy.

## Put a realistic value on your belongings

Walk through clothing, furniture, electronics, kitchen items and the things you keep in storage. An inventory can make the total easier to estimate. Compare replacement-cost and actual-cash-value settlement, the deductible and any special limits on valuables. Share higher-value items separately instead of assuming the overall personal-property limit guarantees that each item would be fully reimbursed after any type of loss.

## Compare more than the monthly payment

Coverage choices, property limits, location and the deductible can affect renters insurance cost. Review personal liability and additional living expense coverage alongside belongings protection. Ask about the full policy-term cost, payment options and any available multi-policy discount. A bundle may be worth comparing, but check the combined protection and total price rather than assuming that putting two policies together always creates the better result.

## Plan for the move and the policy documents

Tell the broker about roommates, a home business, valuable equipment or other circumstances that need a closer review. Ask who will be insured and which documents can be provided once coverage is confirmed. Keep the policy, proof of coverage and your inventory accessible. If you already have renters insurance, discuss the address change and effective date before assuming the same terms automatically apply at your new home.

Good questions

## Know before you choose.

### Does my landlord’s insurance cover my belongings?

A landlord’s building policy generally does not insure a tenant’s personal belongings. A renters policy is designed for the tenant’s own property and liability needs.

### What do I need to get a quote?

Share the apartment address, lease requirements and desired start date. Estimate the value of the belongings you want to protect.

### Does requesting a quote start my coverage?

No. A quote request does not bind, change or cancel insurance. Coverage starts only when confirmed by the insurer or an authorized representative, subject to the effective date, policy terms and any required payment.

### Should I choose replacement cost or actual cash value for belongings?

Compare both the premium and the settlement terms. Actual cash value generally accounts for age and wear. Replacement-cost coverage can provide a different basis for replacing covered property, subject to the policy’s conditions and limits.

### Does additional living expense coverage pay all my bills?

No. It generally addresses eligible additional costs when a covered loss makes the rental uninhabitable, subject to policy limits and conditions. Ask what triggers the coverage and how reimbursement works.

### Will a renters and auto bundle always cost less?

No single outcome applies to everyone. Ask for available bundled and separate-policy options, and compare their total premiums, limits and deductibles before choosing.
