The coverage conversation
An auto repair insurance review should distinguish premises and operations liability, business property, employees, shop vehicles and customer vehicles in the business's care. Garagekeepers or other specialized forms may be relevant, but are not assumed included or available through CoverTrust. A generic business policy is only a starting point for the conversation.
Describe the repair operation precisely
Separate mechanical repair, tires, bodywork, paint, detailing, sales, towing and mobile service where applicable. Explain vehicle types, any specialized work and services performed by subcontractors. A shop that repairs private passenger cars may need different questions from one servicing larger commercial vehicles.
Include work done away from the premises and any plans to expand. Describe how keys and vehicles move through the business. The application should reflect the real operation rather than using the broad label auto repair to stand in for every activity.
Give customer vehicles their own coverage review
Identify how many vehicles may be held at once, their approximate values and whether they are stored indoors, outdoors or at another location. Explain overnight storage, pickup and delivery, test drives and any towing. These details help frame the specialist questions without predicting an insurer's eligibility decision.
Ask specifically how the proposal treats damage to customer vehicles while in your care. Garagekeepers protection differs from liability for other aspects of running the shop, and forms can use different bases of coverage. Daniel must confirm suitable options and terms; this page does not promise a garagekeepers product or treat it as part of every BOP.
Separate shop property from vehicles and employee tools
List lifts, diagnostic equipment, compressors, parts stock, computers and tenant improvements. Identify leased equipment and tools owned by employees rather than by the business. Ask whose property is insured and how it would be valued after a covered loss.
Review deductibles, equipment-related exclusions and any business income protection separately. A mechanical failure, a fire damaging the shop and an interruption in business can involve different provisions. Do not assume the property limit answers every equipment breakdown or lost-income question.
Distinguish correcting a repair from resulting damage
A callback to redo work, a warranty obligation and an allegation that completed work caused further damage are different issues. Describe the concern and ask how the actual forms address it. General descriptions of liability should not be used to promise that a particular repair dispute will be covered.
Review customer agreements, fleet-service contracts and any requests for specific limits or endorsements. A certificate can summarize selected policy information, but cannot broaden coverage. Flag any contract requirement the proposed policy does not clearly satisfy before representing that it has been met.
Include drivers, employees and connected systems
Prepare payroll by job duty and explain who moves or drives vehicles. Separate business-owned vehicles from customer vehicles and employees' personal cars used for errands. Share operating states and any pickup, delivery or loaner arrangements for review.
Describe the information held in scheduling, payment and customer-management systems. Then request a written outline showing which exposures the proposal addresses, which need specialist review and what information is still outstanding. Confirm the policy and effective date with the insurer or authorized representative before relying on protection.
Have these details ready.
- Repair services, vehicle types, off-site work and subcontractors.
- Customer vehicle values, storage, test drives and transport arrangements.
- Shop equipment, stock, leased items and employee-owned tools.
- Payroll, drivers, current policies and customer or lease requirements.
Common questions.
Is garagekeepers insurance included in a standard BOP?
Do not assume so. It is a specialized customer-vehicle question requiring review of available forms and eligibility. Daniel must confirm whether a suitable option can be arranged.
Does the shop's commercial auto policy cover every customer car?
No general assumption is safe. Customer vehicles, business vehicles, test drives and towing can involve different terms. Explain each activity and request a specific coverage review.
Will insurance pay to correct a faulty repair?
Not automatically. Redoing work, fulfilling a warranty and responding to a covered claim for resulting damage are different issues governed by policy wording.
Should I disclose bodywork, painting or towing?
Yes, even when occasional or subcontracted. Those activities should be evaluated before a proposal is treated as appropriate for the whole business.
