Restaurant insurance: prepare a quote around your operation

A neighborhood café, a full-service restaurant and a catering operation may all serve food, but they do not present the same insurance questions. Start with your actual menu, premises and service model. CoverTrust welcomes inquiries from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania; available options depend on the operation, location and insurer review.

Prompt quote handling. Clear pricing. No additional broker fees.

The coverage conversation

A restaurant insurance review may begin with a business owner's policy covering selected liability, property and business income exposures. Delivery, alcohol service, food spoilage, equipment breakdown and employee risks require their own questions. A package name does not establish that those exposures are included or that a particular restaurant is eligible.

Describe how food reaches the customer

Separate dine-in service, takeout, delivery, catering and events. Explain whether food is prepared at one location or several, and whether the business operates from shared premises. Include seating, hours, entertainment and alcohol service where relevant. An application should describe the whole operation, including activities that occur only occasionally.

List planned changes, such as a new delivery program or additional kitchen, before comparing proposals. An insurer reviewing last year's business description may need different information for the business you are about to run. A clear summary helps Daniel identify which questions need an underwriting answer.

Sort the building, fit-out and equipment

Identify what the business owns, leases or is required to insure under its lease. Include kitchen equipment, fixtures, furnishings, signs and stock, along with improvements paid for by the business. Keep the landlord's building responsibilities separate from your own property interests.

Ask how the proposed policy values damaged property, what deductibles apply and whether any category has a separate limit. Equipment repair, damage caused by an equipment failure and food lost after a temperature change can be different coverage questions. Bring a current equipment inventory rather than assuming the lease's insurance limit describes all your assets.

Put food, temperature and alcohol questions in writing

Describe refrigeration dependence, food handling and any off-site service. Ask what the proposal does and does not address if stock spoils, equipment stops working or a customer alleges harm from food. Read the relevant conditions instead of treating a general property or liability label as a complete answer.

If alcohol is sold, served or distributed, disclose that activity explicitly. Liquor liability and other specialized restaurant protections may need separate forms or a specialist market review. Daniel must confirm whether an appropriate option is available; this page does not promise that any specialty coverage is included or offered for every operation.

Review the conditions for business income

Business income protection generally depends on a covered event and the policy's trigger, limits and covered period. It is not a general guarantee against slower sales, staffing shortages or every temporary closure. Ask what must happen before a claim could qualify.

Prepare a description of expenses that continue during a covered interruption and whether the operation could temporarily move or change service. Ask about waiting periods, extra-expense provisions and any relevant utility interruption terms. Keep these answers separate from the amount selected for kitchen equipment; they serve different purposes.

Bring people, vehicles and contracts into the quote

Share payroll by duty, employee arrangements and operating states. Explain delivery performed by employees, contractors or third-party platforms, including use of personal vehicles. Do not assume a platform's insurance or an employee's personal auto policy settles the restaurant's own exposure.

Review online ordering, payment systems and customer information as a separate cyber discussion. Then bring the lease, current policies and any event or catering contract requirements. Ask which information remains outstanding, what coverage can be proposed and when it could become effective. A submitted request or prepared comparison is not proof of coverage.

Have these details ready.

  • Service model, locations, hours and any alcohol, catering or delivery activity.
  • Equipment, furnishings, improvements and stock values.
  • Payroll by duty, vehicle use and payment or ordering systems.
  • Lease requirements, current policies and desired coverage start date.

Common questions.

Does a restaurant BOP automatically include food spoilage?

No. Ask whether spoilage is included, endorsed or excluded, and review the event, limit and deductible that apply. Equipment damage and lost food should be discussed separately.

Can I assume liquor liability is included in general liability?

No. Disclose alcohol activities and have the actual policy wording reviewed. A specialized option may be needed, and its availability must be confirmed.

Does delivery through a platform remove my insurance questions?

No. Explain who drives, whose vehicles are used and the restaurant's role. Platform terms do not automatically answer the business's own liability or vehicle coverage questions.

What makes a restaurant quote ready to compare?

The proposals should use the same operations, property values, payroll and effective date. Compare limits, exclusions, deductibles and full payment terms, and identify any specialty question still awaiting an answer.
